The rent receipt is India’s highest-demand personal document: salaried tenants submit them for HRA tax exemption, and landlords issue them as proof of rent received. One receipt per month is the convention employers expect.
- Annual rent above ₹1,00,000? Your employer will need the landlord’s PAN for HRA — the receipt has a field for it.
- Paying by cash above ₹5,000, affix a ₹1 revenue stamp and have the landlord sign across it; digital payments need no stamp.
- Generate one receipt per month rather than a single lump receipt — payroll teams routinely reject consolidated ones.
- Keep the period text exact ("June 2026"); it must line up with your HRA declaration.
Do I need receipts if rent is below ₹3,000/month?
CBDT guidance spares employees below ₹3,000/month from producing receipts, but employers can still ask. Above that, keep receipts.
Landlord refuses PAN — what then?
For rent above ₹1 lakh/year without landlord PAN, employers typically deny the HRA exemption through payroll; you may still pursue it in your return with evidence. Get the PAN if at all possible.
